Consistency – a word that holds immense power yet often feels like an elusive goal for many, myself included. As a neurodivergent who has shared my struggles and triumphs in previous blog posts, I want to dive into a topic that is close to my heart: the importance of consistency, especially when it comes to rebuilding my fitness routine.
Several weeks ago, I took a leap of faith and signed up for a gym membership at the end of February. The decision to prioritize my physical health was not an easy one, as I grappled with past experiences of being in my peak physical shape during my 20s, only to have my mental health derail my progress and lead me down a different path.
Starting back at the gym was a daunting challenge for multiple reasons. Firstly, the mental barrier of comparing my current abilities to what I once could accomplish weighed heavily on me. Exercises that used to be effortless now felt like insurmountable hurdles, reminding me of the setbacks I had faced along the way.
Secondly, the financial aspect added another layer of resistance. I found that structured classes, such as those offered at fitness studios like Orange Theory, CrossFit, or F45, provided the consistency and motivation I needed but came at a higher cost. Overcoming the reluctance to invest in my well-being was a significant hurdle that required a shift in mindset and a commitment to prioritize my health above temporary comforts.
Lastly, the humility of starting anew at the gym, coupled with the physical discomfort of regaining strength and endurance, tested my resolve. Each burpee, once a mere warm-up, now felt like a monumental task. However, I made a promise to myself to foster consistency and embrace the journey back to a healthier lifestyle.
Setting a realistic goal of attending the gym three days a week became my anchor in the storm. The structured 45-minute workouts, meticulously planned for me, alleviated the burden of decision-making and streamlined my experience. The proximity of the gym, just a brief 3-minute walk away, minimized the effort required to show up, reinforcing my commitment to consistency.
As the weeks passed, a remarkable transformation unfolded. The initial struggles gave way to small victories, and the once daunting workouts began to feel more manageable. The resurgence of my cardio capacity was a testament to the power of persistence and dedication.
In just four weeks, I started to reap the rewards of my consistent efforts. The everyday tasks like carrying groceries up the stairs, once left me breathless now feel more manageable, signaling a tangible improvement in my overall well-being. By prioritizing my health and embracing the challenges along the way, I am witnessing the slow but steady transformation of my quality of life.
The road to consistency is paved with obstacles, setbacks, and moments of doubt. Yet, by staying true to my commitment, leaning into discomfort, and celebrating every small win, I am reclaiming control over my fitness journey. As I continue to strive for progress, I remind myself that this is not just a temporary change but a lasting investment in my well-being and future. The journey of a thousand miles truly does begin with a single step – and I am determined to keep moving forward, one workout at a time.
