Embracing Self-Care: A Neurodivergent BCBA Millennial’s Journey Back to Fitness

As a neurodivergent BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) in my late 30s, I recently embarked on a challenging yet rewarding journey back to fitness after neglecting my health and well-being for over a year.

In my 20s, fitness was a significant part of my life. I worked out regularly, falling in love with CrossFit and running. However, as time passed and responsibilities piled up, I found myself prioritizing work over self-care. The fear of starting again after a long hiatus was overwhelming. The thought of not being as physically capable as I once was due to my neglect was humbling.

It dawned on me that taking care of myself is not just about the present but also about setting the stage for a better future. Simple tasks like carrying groceries to my walk-up apartment or enjoying a day at the park were becoming challenging due to my declining physical condition. It became clear that I needed to make a change to improve my quality of life.

Reevaluating the reasons to work out in my 30s versus my 20s was crucial. Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics or performance, my main goal now is to enhance my overall well-being and functionality. The priorities shifted from seeking external validation to achieving internal harmony and strength.

Starting back into a workout routine was tough, but the benefits were immediate. After just a couple of weeks, I began to feel more energetic, my mood improved, and I regained a sense of vitality that had been missing. The famous fitness mantra, “In two weeks, you’ll feel it; in four weeks, you’ll see it, and in eight weeks, you’ll hear it,” became my motivation.

Every sweat session, every set, and every rep are not just about physical exertion but also about mental resilience and self-love. Through this journey, I am learning to be patient with myself, to celebrate small victories, and to embrace the process of growth and transformation.

For anyone contemplating a return to fitness or starting a new wellness journey, remember that the hardest part is taking the first step. Be kind to yourself, stay consistent, and trust in the power of progress. The road to a healthier, happier you may be challenging, but the rewards are immeasurable. Start today for a better tomorrow.
