A Neurodivergent BCBA Millennial’s Journey to Consistency: A Reflection

As a neurodivergent BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) millennial, embarking on a journey of consistency in 2024 has been both rewarding and challenging. In this several-week check-in, I would like to share my progress, setbacks, and the valuable lessons I’ve learned thus far. With a focus on mindfulness and a determination to change my perspectives, I started tracking various aspects of my life in order to foster consistency.

1. Overcoming the All-or-Nothing Mentality:

One of the primary challenges I encountered early on was the all-or-nothing mentality. While I did experience a temporary setback and fell off the wagon for a couple of weeks, I chose to celebrate the victory of getting back on track. It is crucial to remember that inconsistency is natural, and what truly matters is maintaining a commitment to consistency rather than striving for perfection. Despite a two-week gap in my data, I reminded myself that this stumble didn’t define me, and I continued on my journey.

2. Aligning Execution with Vision:

Another challenge that surfaced was the disparity between my execution and my vision. This disconnect can be particularly demoralizing when grappling with all-or-nothing thinking. However, I persevered and diligently tracked my progress to the best of my ability, appreciating that small steps forward were still steps in the right direction. Recognizing this misalignment has enabled me to adjust my approach and reassess the strategies implemented, gradually bridging the gap between my vision and execution.

3. Overcoming the Feeling of Rush:

Feeling rushed, unprepared, or lacking in-depth knowledge before commencing a task has been an ongoing hurdle throughout this journey. Learning, adapting, and course-correcting while actively engaging in the pursuit of consistency can be daunting. Making peace with the inherent mistakes and reframing them as opportunities for growth has been instrumental. Rather than allowing these errors to discourage me, I have chosen to view them as valuable lessons that contribute to personal and professional development.

Conclusion:

As I reflect on my journey towards consistency as a neurodivergent BCBA millennial, I am reminded of the importance of celebrating wins, accepting imperfections, and embracing the continuous process of growth. There have been ups and downs, detours and redirections, but through mindful efforts and a commitment to change perspectives, progress can be made.

Consistency may not always be linear or straightforward, but each step forward, no matter how small, brings us closer to our goals. I remain determined to persist in this journey, knowing that the challenges I encounter serve as stepping stones towards a more consistent and balanced life.

If you are also on a similar journey, I encourage you to embrace the inevitable setbacks, recollect your thoughts, and continue moving forward. Remember, it is through consistency that we lay the foundation for personal fulfillment and success.
